Telecom companies allowed to share active infrastructure

Ministry of Communication has finally approved TRAI's recommendation to allow telecom service providers share active infrastructure. Active infrastructure covers antenna, feeder cables, nodes, radio access network (RAN), transmission systems & backhaul.

RAILWAYS

Railways open gate for private players in wagon business

In a move that will end the monopoly of its public sector enterprise, Railway Ministry has unveiled 2 schemes - the wagon leasing scheme (WLS) & the liberalised wagon investment scheme (LWIS) that will permit private companies to own & lease wagons, which was so far the mandate of Indian Railway Finance Corporation

Private container players challenging Concor's near-monopoly

With just over a year since Ministry of Railways allowed 14 private companies to handle container transport operations, the private container-train players are throwing a formidable challenge to government-owned Container Corporation of India (Concor). Concor's near-monopoly market share of 95% is expected to fall to 75% by end of 2008-09.

India expects to double port capacity to 1500 million tonnes by 2011-12 and would require Rs. 1 trillion (USD 25 billion) investment in the port, shipping & inland waterways.

KoPT to go for massive cargo containerization & installation of cranes

Over 3300 vessels called at Kolkata & Haldia ports in 2007-08. They handled a total container traffic of 425,000 TEUs (20 foot equivalent units) of which Kolkata Dock System handled 325,000, while the rest by Haldia Dock Complex.

SKS seeks turnkey contractors for 1200 MW coal based plant in Raigarh

SKS Power Generation (Chhattisgarh) Ltd., a subsidiary of SKS Ispat and Power Ltd., is preparing ground for setting up a 1200 MW (4x300 MW) coal-based power project in Raigarh district at an estimated cost of Rs. 5000 crore.

A proposed sunset clause in Union Budget 2008-09 aimed at withdrawing the tax holiday under Section 80-IB(9) for undertakings where refining of mineral oil begins after 1st April 2009.

Private Equity gung-ho on infrastructure

According to experts, private equity (PE) investments in India have witnessed a significant growth over the years. PE deals which stood at USD 1.1 billion (60 deals) in 2004, increased to USD 2 billion (124 deals) in 2005, then to USD 7.9 billion (302 deals) in 2006 and to USD 19.03 billion (405 deals) in 2007. Increasingly, infrastructure is emerging as a favourite for PE investments.

EQUIPMENT

Chinese equipment manufacturers make their presence felt in India's power sector

From zero presence in the Indian power equipment market a couple of years ago, Chinese companies are likely to supply as much as 30% of the equipment requirement for meeting the XI Plan's capacity addition target of 78,000 MW.
